News and Notes -- April 4, 2006

It has been a while since Professor Briggs took a look at what some of our area's student-athletes are doing at the collegiate level.

> Reynolds graduate Kristen Micsky is a senior jumper for the Duquesne University women's track and field team. Saturday at Carnegie Mellon, Micsky won the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 5 inches. She also took second in the long jump (17-3/4) and the triple jump (38-9 1/2). Micsky also ran anchor on Duquesne's second-place 4x400-meter relay team (3:57.87).

Micsky also took fourth in the heptathlon at the Virginia Commonwealth Invitational March 18 with 3,783 points.

> Sharpsville product Steve Killa is a freshman golfer at St. Vincent College in Latrobe. He fired a two-day score of (85-79) 164 at the Washington and Jefferson Peter C. Rossin Memorial Tournament last weekend. Killa carded a 78 in a 309-318 dual match win at Grove City last Thursday.

> Reynolds alum Amanda Hauser is a freshman outfielder for the Thiel College softball team. She has started 15 of the Tomcats' 20 games this year and is hitting .167 (7 for 42). She has one triple and three runs batted in this season.

> Grove City High School grad Kristen Hughes is a sophomore outfielder for the Grove City College softball team. Hughes is hitting .323 this year. She is second on the team with 10 runs scored and has nine runs batted in. Hughes hit a three-run homer against Thomas More Saturday, the first round-tripper of her collegiate career.

> Hickory High product Chere' Marshall played in 21 games for the St. Bonaventure women's basketball team (9-18 overall) this season. She made one start this year and averaged 2.7 points per game. Marshall averaged 10.7 minutes played per game and shot 32 percent from the floor.

> Grove City High graduate Amber McFeely turned in a fine senior season as a member of the Slippery Rock University women's basketball team. McFeely averaged 7.5 points and 6.1 assists per game this year, helping SRU (13-15) advance to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference tournament.

> Sharon graduate Chris Norris is a sophomore infielder for the Westminster College baseball team. Norris has played in five games, including one start, this season. He is 1-for-4 at the plate this year.

> Wilmington grad Andrew Robison is a sophomore relief pitcher for Westminster. He has appeared in six games this season and has a team-high two saves. Robinson is 0-2 with an 1.00 ERA. He has nine strikeouts in nine innings.

> Grove City High graduate Billy Herman is a freshman second baseman for the Slippery Rock University baseball team. Herman has played in all 23 games, including 21 starts, for The Rock (15-8 overall, 3-1 PSAC-West). He is hitting .328 with one home run and 16 runs batted in. Herman has also scored 16 runs this year.

> Two Slippery Rock High products are sophomore pitchers at Slippery Rock U -- Mike DeCola and Scott Rice. DeCola has made three appearances this year and has not allowed a run in 3 1/3 innings. Rice, meanwhile, is 1-0 with a 5.06 ERA. He has allowed 17 hits in 16 innings. Rice has made four appearances, with one start.

> Slippery Rock University has named Rob Keys as its new defensive backfield coach on its football coaching staff. Keys comes to The Rock after having served as a defensive assistant and special teams coach at Division I-AA Indiana State.  

> The Penn State Behrend men's and women's track and field teams are stocked with Mercer County-area talent. On the women's side, Greenville grad Lauren Kremm is a freshman sprinter and jumper. She took 12th in the long jump at Carnegie Mellon Saturday with a mark of 15-7 1/2. The men's team features Brad Ruffo (West Middlesex), Tom Clyde (Hickory) and Mark Lukasko (Sharpsville).

> Commodore Perry graduate Chris Clark is a sophomore distance runner for the Clarion University men's track and field team. He took second in the 5000 at Carnegie Mellon Saturday, posting a time of 15:11.20.

> West Middlesex High products Andrew and Josiah Leuenberger are distance runners for the Grove City College men's track and field team. Andrew Leuenberger, a junior, took 16th in the 5000 at Carnegie Mellon's West Penn Championships Saturday with a time of 16:36.72. Josiah Leuenberger is a sophomore for the Wolverines. Their father, Jim, is an assistant track coach at Grove City.

> Grove City High alum Jim Jaskowak is a freshman pitcher at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. Jaskowak has appeared in four games this year for the Yellow Jackets (10-7). He is 0-0 with a 9.72 ERA. Jaskowak does have nine strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings this year.
