Fun With Numbers -- January 25, 2008

Basketball season is in full swing at the collegiate level, which provides plenty of fodder for the first "Fun With Numbers" for the 2008 season.

> The fun began way back in November as Edinboro's women's basketball team opened the season with a 118-17 home victory over Temple Baptist Nov. 17 at McComb Field House. Temple Baptist apparently dressed only five players for the game. Temple Baptist, based in Cincinnati, made only one of its 20 first-half shot attempts. Thirty-six TBC turnovers led to 57 Edinboro points.

> Cheyney University's assist-to-turnover ratio took a beating in a 92-47 loss at California (Pa.) in PSAC women's action Dec. 1. Cheyney had eight assists but 38 turnovers against the Vulcans.

> Sometimes, oddball numbers appear in games that you might not necessarily think would produce them. But the Clarion-Brockport State men's basketball game Jan. 2 featured the following:
    *59 total fouls
    *60 total turnovers
*Clarion shooting 35 of 46 at the foul line (CUP attempted only 44 field goals)
*None of the 110 field goals attempted in the game were blocked
*Clarion's Ricky Henderson just missing a triple-double with 14 points, 11 rebounds and nine turnovers
*The game took almost 2 1/2 hours to complete

> The Grove City College women's basketball team has six wins this year, which surpasses the 2006-07 total of five. This year, the Wolverines are 5-0 when scoring 61 or more points in a game. Still, the Wolverines pulled a rare feat against Bethany January 12. Grove City placed four players in double figures, including two players with double-doubles, yet did not break the 50-point barrier. Bethany earned a 56-47 win over Grove City in the Grove City College Arena.

> One game prior, Bethany piled up 99 points in a 99-88 win over Saint Vincent. Saint Vincent committed 35 turnovers, yet still managed 88 points. Saint Vincent shot 30 of 40 at the foul line.

> Tough night for the Waynesburg University women's basketball team Wednesday night against Chatham. Waynesburg managed just one first-half field goal in a 46-27 loss to the Cougars.

> The Thiel men's basketball team shot 60 percent from the field, held a 32-31 rebound edge and went 31 of 38 at the foul line at Thomas More December 5.  Yet, Thomas More pulled out a 96-84 victory. Thomas More forced 22 Thiel turnovers while committing just 10 in the win.

> It is safe to say that turnovers played a big role in Pomona-Pitzer's 75-54 loss at Chapman November 20 in Orange, Calif. I don't recall seeing a figure higher than that over the past several years. It's four turnovers more than Pacific Union's 48 against Occidental three days earlier.

> Slippery Rock point guard Darnell Johnson certainly boosted his assist-to-turnover ratio December 6 in the Rock's 103-95 overtime win over visiting Glenville State.  Johnston dished out 22 assists and had just one turnover while playing all 45 minutes in the victory.
